Curriculum Vitae: Resume/CV (Limit of four pages) Emphasize research or cultural production experience, or experiences that depended upon writing and presentation skills. Personal Statement: Statement of Research Interest This 500-800 word essay should primarily focus on your research interest, its methodology, and academic importance, with reference to how your background or career supports the research plan. Following the essay, please add the information about stream, faculty and publications etc. Additional Information (see description below). About three quarters of it should focus on a clear, concise Research Plan in some detail, and remaining part can describe how your academic or professional background fits the topic and our program. This essay should demonstrate your understanding of our program and the fit of your topic to our program. You may include some citations for other research or academic literature, but a full bibliography is not necessary. Ensure that you have contextualized the topic within the broader field of communications and cultural studies. We recommend that you have 1-2 other academics or grad students read it for feedback on clarity and academic tone. This should be written similar to an academic assignment or scholarship proposal, especially if it is for a PhD application. Applicants for the part-time Master’s program should include a sentence or two to address the challenges of attendance in daytime classes, i.e. your employer’s flexibility, and maintaining your motivation over 3-5 years to complete the program. A weak reference will significantly affect how we assess your application. Writing Sample: Sample of Work = one writing sample Submit one (1) short sample (5-6 pages, maximum of 10 pages) of your best academic writing on a relevant topic. You might condense or excerpt from a previous course essay that performed a critical analysis of cultural theory, an academic interpretation of policy or a case study, or a strong synthesis of a literature review. Personal Statement: Statement of Thesis Intent You are required to submit a brief written statement of about 500 words outlining your research interests within the discipline of architecture. Your statement should relate to one or more of the Research Areas of the program. What is the role of the architectural profession in the coming decades? As the program will use this statement to determine the availability of an appropriate Supervisor, you should try to be as precise as possible. Recommendation Letter: Letters of Recommendation A minimum of two Letters of Recommendation are required for each application. Reference letters are a key component of your application package and close attention must be paid prior to selecting a referee. It is also your responsibility to contact the referee before filling out the online application form to confirm their availability. Your referees should have the ability to comment on your past achievements and your potential as a graduate student. In most cases, the referees will be former professors or research supervisors familiar with your abilities. If you have been out of school for a significant period of time, a letter from an employer may be more appropriate. Applicants who have graduated from the Ryerson B.Arch.Sci. in 2013, 2014, 2015 or 2017 are not required to submit letters of reference. Portfolio: The Portfolio is a collection of your work that demonstrates your high level of competence in all aspects of architectural design and representation. It is probably the most important single piece of documentation that you will submit in this application, and should receive significant attention both in terms of content and design. It should include both work done at school and as a professional. Format 1. The portfolio must be presented in a bound document, letter (8 ½ x 11) or A4 size. Pay attention to the design of the document. 2. The portfolio must include the following information on the front cover: 1. The words “Master of Architecture Portfolio” 2. Your name 3. Your mailing address, telephone number, email address, and other contact information. 3. Page two of the portfolio must be the completed Statement of Authorship. 4. The portfolio may include up to thirty additional pages (printed on one side) or fifteen additional pages printed on both sides. The portfolio may include images of creative work in any media. Please note that the portfolios will not be returned. Digital media such as CDs and DVDs will not normally be reviewed; if your work is heavily video-based, please contact the Program Director prior to submitting your application. 5. Remember, graphic design and package design do matter. 6. All work must be clearly labelled. Identify the name/title of the work or project, the medium and date of work, and provide any other information regarding the work submitted. If work was produced in a professional context, identify your specific role or roles on the project. 7. Any materials not included in the bound portfolio will be discarded.
