A detailed curriculum vitae (CV). Include post-secondary education, list of awards, publications, presentations, and relevant work and volunteer experience. You can use the form provided through the online application or submit your own.
Personal Statement:
A definitive statement of intent specifying the area of interest and plans for study in the graduate program. The statement of intent should be approximately two pages in length and include:
Last academic degree and degree sought at the University of Alberta
Anthropology background and relevant work/volunteer experience
Brief statement of interest, topological and geographical, including desired subfield specialization in anthropology
Potential thesis research topic
Potential supervisor(s) and if you have contacted them
Recommendation Letter:
Three (3) original academic letters of reference. Provide the contact information, including email address, of your three referees in the online application system. Upon submission of your application (i.e. payment of the application fee) your referees will be sent an email containing a link that will allow them to securely submit their reference. They can choose to fill out the reference form, submit a letter or both. References provided in conjunction with an application for graduate admission are considered to be supplied in confidence and will only be disclosed as required in the admission process of the applicant or in accordance with Federal and Provincial Statutes regulating disclosure of personal information.
Writing Sample:
Written sample of recent work in English (e.g. marked paper, published article, article manuscript, MA thesis or part thereof). This will be used to assess analytical ability. |

Uploaded documents must meet the following criteria in order to be accepted:
The document must include the applicant’s full name, post-secondary institution name, academic program, the grading scheme/scale legend, names and numbers of courses, year and term of attendance, credits, and grades received.
The transcript must be scanned in its entirety (front and back pages) and be legible.
As applicable:
Transcripts provided to support a degree that has been conferred must cover the entire period of the degree.
An English translation of transcripts in languages other than English must be provided by the issuing institution or by a certified translator.
If the transcript is issued in French by a Canadian institution, then no English language translation is required.
Acceptable transcripts may include either:
A transcript issued to the student by the post-secondary institution; or
A transcript/student record obtained from self-serve web system of the post-secondary institutions (must meet the criteria listed above and provide the system's URL and print date)
We do not accept documents notarized by a notary public, or endorsed by a lawyer, professor, or judge.
Transcripts uploaded on the online application portal are considered to be unofficial documents.
If an applicant receives a conditional offer of admission, they must then provide official transcripts. These must be sent directly from the post-secondary institution to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research office for authentication purposes.
