Personal Statement:

Recommendation Letter:
3 letters of reference:These should be submitted online using the electronic reference (“e-ref”) system in the application. Referees listed on the applicants’ forms will be sent an automatically-generated email invitation to submit their references once the applicant has submitted his/her on-line application, and then will have until Monday, January 16th, 2018 to submit their references online. Referees can choose to answer the list of standard questions provided online, OR submit a separate, signed letter of reference as a PDF that is uploaded to the system OR both, if they wish.

To finalize your admissions offer, please arrange for 2 sets of official final transcripts to be sent directly to The Faculty of Graduate and Post Doctoral Studies. International applicants must provide original language transcripts and degree certificates, and certified English translations of both documents. If these documents are not received, UBC will prevent you from registering. In addition to satisfying the document requirements for admissions, we highly recommend ordering additional copies of official transcripts prior to traveling to Vancouver. These extra documents may be used to support future major scholarship competitions. Students are not required to submit UBC transcripts to finalize admissions.
Personal Statement:
Upload a personal statement which describes your career goals and your proposed research area. Applicants are required to scan official transcripts of all previous academic work from all post-secondary institutions as digital files (.pdfs) and upload them to the online application system (GRASP). If the academic records are in a language other than English or French, students are required to arrange for certified translations to be attached, as well. Applicants who are given offers will be asked to mail their official, original, or certified copies of the original records, in envelopes sealed and endorsed by the issuing institution to the Sociology Graduate Office. Please note that an official degree certificate must also be submitted if the degree granted is not indicated on your transcripts.

Recommendation Letter:
Applicants should provide names and contact information for three academic referees via the online application system (GRASP). Once the application fee is paid,the system will automatically generate emails to the referees. Referees will be provided with a link to an online e-reference page where they will have the option to either fill out an online form or upload a letter of reference in Word or PDF format. If your referee would rather complete a paper application you can download the application from the system and send it to them. If they decide on this option we will require the paper reference to be sent to the Sociology Graduate Office in a sealed envelope with the referee's signature across the seal.

Please provide a written prospectus that indicates your proposed area of study for the M.A. or Ph.D. degree in Sociology. What research questions motivate you? What theoretical tradition(s) will likely inform or structure your research? Are there specific methodological skills you hope to develop and apply while in the program? Please also identify one of more potential faculty supervisors with whom you would like to work. Your prospectus should be between 500 and 1000 words in length.
Applicants to the M.A. program who have not completed a B.A. in Sociology and applicants to the Ph.D. program who do not have a B.A. or M.A. degree in Sociology should include with their prospectus an additional statement of 500 words or fewer describing their level of preparedness for graduate study in Sociology, e.g., completed courses with substantial sociological content, sociological research and sociologists that have informed your own work, related research assistantship experiences, etc. |

You must submit transcripts from all post-secondary institutions you have previously attended, including transcripts from universities attended on exchange. If you are currently completing a degree, submit your transcripts to date. In that case, UBC will not grant final confirmation of acceptance until you have submitted the final transcripts after the degree is conferred.
If the academic records are in a language other than English or French, you must submit the transcripts in their original language and accompany them with official translations.
You can upload scans of official transcripts in your online application. When offered admissions, you must arrange for official transcripts in hardcopy.
Curriculum Vitae:
A 1–2 page summary of your experiences in education, work, travel, volunteering, and other relevant areas.
Personal Statement:
A 1–2 page statement outlining your interest in the program of choice and your motivation to pursue this degree at UBC. You will upload the statement as part of your online application. Some degrees have more specific requirements:MASA and MASLA:
Outline your research interests and aspirations. Describe the proposed area of research and explain why you believe it is important. Include methodology, citations, and a bibliography, and explain how your work experience, readings, and related activities have influenced your chosen research pursuit. Nominate no more than three professors to act as your primary research supervisor and discuss how your research interests align with theirs.
Recommendation Letter:
You must arrange for three letters of reference, two of which should be academic and speak to your past performance and ability to succeed in a graduate program. Referees submit their letters through the online application system.
Portfolio:
Submit at least one and no more than three examples of previous scholarly or creative works. At least one example of writing should clearly indicate research ability and be identified as such. |
