The LLM CL Program requires official copies of all university transcripts. If the transcripts are not in English, then you must provide a plain language English language translation. For degrees from China, official original and English language translations of degree certificates are required in addition to transcripts. Your transcripts and degree certificates, including translated copies if needed, must be uploaded directly to the online application. Copies mailed by post will not be accepted, except in special circumstances.
Curriculum Vitae:
Provide details of education, academic awards, relevant work experience, relevant volunteer experience, publications, conference presentations, etc. Please upload a copy of your CV to your online application.
Recommendation Letter:
The LLM CL Program requires three letters of reference, at least one of which should be from an academic referee who is able to speak to your abilities as a student.
If you add the email addresses of your referees to your online application, an email will be sent to your referees giving them several options for submitting letters of reference. If your referees prefer to provide you with hard copies of the letters, then the letters must be in sealed envelope with the seal signed by the referee. Your interest in planning and why you have chosen it as a career;
Any previous experience that has influenced your decision to pursue a planning career (e.g., employment and/or volunteer experiences, academic background, conferences attended, etc.);
Why you have chosen SCARP, in particular, for your graduate planning education;
Any other background information you feel is pertinent;
Recommendation Letter:
SCARP requires exactly three references. Additional references will not be considered as part of the final application file.
References should be from individuals who can assess your academic or professional qualifications and your communication skills. In most cases, at least two references should be academic. If you have been away from school for several years, all references may be from non-academics who are capable of assessing your professional and, if possible, your potential academic performance. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their references submit documentation by the deadlines specified. The reference deadline is less than a week from the application deadline. Contact references in advance of submitting an application to ensure they have adequate time to provide a letter. There are three possible formats for references: electronic references, paper letters of reference, and paper reference forms. SCARP prefers that references utilize the electronic reference system in the online application. For more information, see the grad studies webpage for Letters of Reference.
Please note that an online application must be submitted before referees receive a request to produce a reference.
Writing Sample:
Each applicant must also submit at least one sample of academic research and writing. An undergraduate thesis, previous academic publications, or previous academic project are all acceptable writing samples. |

Applicants must arrange for the submission of official transcripts in Chinese and certified (literal) translations to be sent directly from the home university to UBC. Official proof of degree conferral is required in the form of Chinese and certified English degree certificates.
Recommendation Letter:
Applicants should arrange for three letters of recommendation supporting their application. We prefer that recommendations be written by people who know the demands of rigorous, research-oriented MSc program and can comment confidently on the applicant's ability to complete the program successfully as well his or her potential as a researcher. This usually means that referees are academics familiar with the applicant's scholastic and research potential. Where applicants have been away from an academic environment for an extended period of time, non-academic references may be substituted.
