Writing Sample:
Copies of two essays as examples of your written academic work in English. If you are intending to complete a creative writing thesis as part of your program, one of your samples should be a creative writing piece you have written in the past;
Thesis Statement:
A brief statement of your area of thesis interest, with preliminary ideas for your thesis.This last statement will help the selection committee with respect to understanding which of the four departments working in the Master of Arts in Children's Literature Program is likely to have a faculty member to supervise your thesis.The thesis statement should be well-researched and cited. |

If the transcripts are in a language other than English a translation must be provided. Please include the front and back of each page of all transcripts. Each transcript must be uploaded as a single PDF; do not upload a separate PDF for each page of the transcript. If you are accepted to an EOAS graduate program, two official transcripts in sealed and endorsed envelopes from each of your attended post-secondary institutions must be received by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies office within 6 weeks of having received notification of acceptance. If the official transcript does not indicate the degree name and the degree conferral date, then two official copies of the degree certificate are required. Applicants are required to scan official transcripts of all previous academic work from all post-secondary institutions as digital files (.pdfs) and upload them to the online application system (GRASP). If the academic records are in a language other than English or French, students are required to arrange for certified translations to be attached, as well. Applicants who are given offers will be asked to mail their official, original, or certified copies of the original records, in envelopes sealed and endorsed by the issuing institution to the Sociology Graduate Office. Please note that an official degree certificate must also be submitted if the degree granted is not indicated on your transcripts.

Recommendation Letter:
Applicants should provide names and contact information for three academic referees via the online application system (GRASP). Once the application fee is paid,the system will automatically generate emails to the referees. Referees will be provided with a link to an online e-reference page where they will have the option to either fill out an online form or upload a letter of reference in Word or PDF format. If your referee would rather complete a paper application you can download the application from the system and send it to them. If they decide on this option we will require the paper reference to be sent to the Sociology Graduate Office in a sealed envelope with the referee's signature across the seal.

Please provide a written prospectus that indicates your proposed area of study for the M.A. or Ph.D. degree in Sociology. What research questions motivate you? What theoretical tradition(s) will likely inform or structure your research? Are there specific methodological skills you hope to develop and apply while in the program? Please also identify one of more potential faculty supervisors with whom you would like to work. Your prospectus should be between 500 and 1000 words in length.
Applicants to the M.A. program who have not completed a B.A. in Sociology and applicants to the Ph.D. program who do not have a B.A. or M.A. degree in Sociology should include with their prospectus an additional statement of 500 words or fewer describing their level of preparedness for graduate study in Sociology, e.g., completed courses with substantial sociological content, sociological research and sociologists that have informed your own work, related research assistantship experiences, etc. |

SCARP requires applicants to scan and upload digital copies of all official transcripts (and/or degree certificates and translations). Please ensure that the uploaded documents are official transcripts and include a transcript key. Note that transcript keys are often printed on the reverse sides of official transcripts. Grade reports, marking sheets, and transcripts marked “unofficial” are not acceptable and will not be considered for review.
The uploaded copies of official transcripts are considered “unofficial documents”. We use the unofficial documents to evaluate applicants and make conditional offers of admission.
Transcripts in a language other than English or French must be accompanied by certified translations. Curriculum Vitae:
Each applicant must submit a resume detailing educational background, work and/or volunteer experience, publications (if any), and any academic or professional awards earned.
Personal Statement:
Applicants are required to prepare and submit a research statement/thesis proposal (about 1,000 words). The statement should outline the thesis project you wish to undertake, the research methods you expect to use, and how the work builds on or draws from your previous training or experience.
Recommendation Letter:
References for SCARP should be from individuals who can assess your academic or professional qualifications and your communication skills. In most cases, at least two references should be academic. If you have been away from school for several years, all references may be from non-academics who are capable of assessing your professional and, if possible, your potential academic performance.
There are three possible formats for references: electronic references, paper letters of reference, and paper reference forms. SCARP prefers that references utilize the electronic reference system in the online application. For more information, see the grad studies webpage for Letters of Reference.
Please note that an online application must be submitted before referees receive a request to produce a reference.
Writing Sample:
Each applicant must also submit at least one sample of academic research and writing. An undergraduate thesis, previous academic publications, or previous academic project are all acceptable writing samples. |
