Copies of original transcripts submitted via the online application from each post-secondary institution you have attended. If the transcripts are in a language other than English a translation must be provided. Please include the front and back of each page of all transcripts. Each transcript must be uploaded as a single PDF; do not upload a separate PDF for each page of the transcript. If you are accepted to an EOAS graduate program, two official transcripts in sealed and endorsed envelopes from each of your attended post-secondary institutions must be received by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies office within 6 weeks of having received notification of acceptance. If the official transcript does not indicate the degree name and the degree conferral date, then two official copies of the degree certificate are required. You must submit transcripts from all post-secondary institutions you have previously attended, including transcripts from universities attended on exchange. If you are currently completing a degree, submit your transcripts to date. In that case, UBC will not grant final confirmation of acceptance until you have submitted the final transcripts after the degree is conferred.
If the academic records are in a language other than English or French, you must submit the transcripts in their original language and accompany them with official translations.
You can upload scans of official transcripts in your online application. When offered admissions, you must arrange for official transcripts in hardcopy.
Curriculum Vitae:
A 1–2 page summary of your experiences in education, work, travel, volunteering, and other relevant areas.
Personal Statement:
A 1–2 page statement outlining your interest in the program of choice and your motivation to pursue this degree at UBC. You will upload the statement as part of your online application. Some degrees have more specific requirements:MASA and MASLA:
Outline your research interests and aspirations. Describe the proposed area of research and explain why you believe it is important. Include methodology, citations, and a bibliography, and explain how your work experience, readings, and related activities have influenced your chosen research pursuit. Nominate no more than three professors to act as your primary research supervisor and discuss how your research interests align with theirs.
Recommendation Letter:
You must arrange for three letters of reference, two of which should be academic and speak to your past performance and ability to succeed in a graduate program. Referees submit their letters through the online application system.
Portfolio:
Submit at least one and no more than three examples of previous scholarly or creative works. At least one example of writing should clearly indicate research ability and be identified as such. |

Applicants must arrange for the submission of official transcripts in Chinese and certified (literal) translations to be sent directly from the home university to UBC. Official proof of degree conferral is required in the form of Chinese and certified English degree certificates.
Recommendation Letter:
Applicants should arrange for three letters of recommendation supporting their application. We prefer that recommendations be written by people who know the demands of rigorous, research-oriented MSc program and can comment confidently on the applicant's ability to complete the program successfully as well his or her potential as a researcher. This usually means that referees are academics familiar with the applicant's scholastic and research potential. Where applicants have been away from an academic environment for an extended period of time, non-academic references may be substituted. SCARP requires applicants to scan and upload digital copies of all official transcripts (and/or degree certificates and translations). Please ensure that the uploaded documents are official transcripts and include a transcript key. Note that transcript keys are often printed on the reverse sides of official transcripts. Grade reports, marking sheets, and transcripts marked “unofficial” are not acceptable and will not be considered for review.
The uploaded copies of official transcripts are considered “unofficial documents”. We use the unofficial documents to evaluate applicants and make conditional offers of admission.
Transcripts in a language other than English or French must be accompanied by certified translations. Applicants to SCARP must prepare and submit a 600-word statement of interest. The statement will help us assess whether your objectives can be satisfied by SCARP. We recommend you provide this statement to your referees.
Your statement should outline:
Your interest in planning and why you have chosen it as a career;
Any previous experience that has influenced your decision to pursue a planning career (e.g., employment and/or volunteer experiences, academic background, conferences attended, etc.);
Why you have chosen SCARP, in particular, for your graduate planning education;
Any other background information you feel is pertinent;
Recommendation Letter:
SCARP requires exactly three references. Additional references will not be considered as part of the final application file.
References should be from individuals who can assess your academic or professional qualifications and your communication skills. In most cases, at least two references should be academic. If you have been away from school for several years, all references may be from non-academics who are capable of assessing your professional and, if possible, your potential academic performance. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their references submit documentation by the deadlines specified. The reference deadline is less than a week from the application deadline. Contact references in advance of submitting an application to ensure they have adequate time to provide a letter.
