Transcript:
One transcript (unofficial can be uploaded by student – official transcripts can be mailed to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs and only required if offer is made).
Personal Statement:
A statement of academic/research interests and ambitions (1-2 pages in length). Applicants’ statements of interest should provide a clear and focused description of their research interests including why they wish to enroll in the program. (A strong research statement elaborates, as clearly as possible, a particular thesis research project the student wishes to carry out, ideally by proposing particular research questions and citing relevant academic literature. Greater elaboration is expected for PhD applicants than for MA applicants).
Recommendation Letter:
Two referee appraisal forms and letters of reference (to be uploaded by referees). All applications must be supported by letters of recommendation from at least two faculty members with whom you have studied, who are in a position to assess your potential for graduate studies and research. References from non-academic supervisors may be acceptable.
Writing Sample:
The sample of written work should have been completed in the most recent degree program and can include a term paper, thesis proposal, or published work.
Other Documents:
The application for employment and relevant coursework forms are optional. They are available on the OUAC website or the department website and can be completed and uploaded into the system |

Transcript:
Copies of your academic transcript(s) and degree certificate(s) from each post-secondary institution that you attended (past and/or current), showing all courses and marks are required.
Transcript(s) must be in the original language and include a certified translation if the transcript is not in English.
Only one complete file per institution should be uploaded. (e.g. do not create an individual document for each page of your transcript.)
Personal Statement:
Your Statement of Intent allows you to explain your personal interest in the program to which you are applying. It should reference the kind of knowledge you expect to gain from the program and should define the reasons why you chose the program and how it can satisfy your own interests.
Your Statement of Intent must be uploaded as a PDF document in Carleton Central.
Recommendation Letter:
All applications must be supported by a minimum of two confidential letters of recommendation. A suitable referee is an individual who is fully knowledgeable and aware of your education and abilities. Referees should be academic in nature where possible. Professional referees will only be accepted in situations where the applicant's professional experience is most relevant. You will need to supply the names of your referees, and their email address, in the online application.
Writing Sample:
Your Writing Sample must be uploaded in Carleton Central as a PDF document.
You will want to limit the size of the sample so you can upload it in Carleton Central. If you receive an error during upload, your sample may be too large a file. |

Transcript:
Transcripts of all of your previous undergraduate grades (and graduate grades, if you have already done graduate work), along with a confirmation of the conferred degree. If these are not in English, you must also provide a translation. You will be able to upload your transcripts in the application system. If you are accepted into the program, you will be asked to provide official transcripts.
Curriculum Vitae:
Your C.V. or resumé is required.
Personal Statement:
A personal statement of goals and interests. In this, we would like you to take up to 500 words to describe your goals for graduate work. You should discuss your interest in the area you wish to pursue, including your reflections on any relevant previous study or practical experience. Also, as far as it is now possible, you can tentatively identify the courses you are interested in and the research questions you want to investigate.
Recommendation Letter:
References from two academic referees. You will be asked to provide contact information for at least two academic referees. Once payment of the application fee has been made, Carleton University will contact the referees by email and request them to submit a reference for you. These references should be from university professors who can comment on your past academic work and your aptitude for success in our program. The more specific the referees are in describing your academic performance, the easier it is for us to make a well-informed decision. If you are unable to identify two academic referees, it is permissible to substitute ONE professional referee who can attest to your professional abilities.
Writing Sample:
A sample of an academic paper you have written (in English) that you are particularly proud of and which you think represents your interests and abilities well. |

Transcript:
One copy of Academic Transcripts/Audits from the university or universities you have attended. If you are currently completing your undergraduate degree, upload an interim transcript/audit before the February 1 deadline. Upon recommendation of admission, original official transcripts will be required.
Curriculum Vitae:
One Resumé/Curriculum Vitae is required.
Personal Statement:
One Statement of Intent outlining your interests and objectives in the MJ program. The statement should be a 2-4 page, double-spaced document that discusses who you are, why you wish to become a journalist, what you hope to achieve in our program, and what you hope to do with a Master of Journalism degree.
Recommendation Letter:
Two confidential Referee Appraisal Forms. These are generated electronically to those listed on your OUAC Application form. Ensure the information is correct and the referees have been informed of their role. Referees should be able to comment on your academic background and aptitude for graduate school. Professional journalists applying for advanced standing may list professional references.
Writing Sample:
One set of Writing Samples — ideally works of journalism. Your samples should display your skills as a writer, researcher or thinker. The samples should consist of newspaper and magazine clippings, and newsletters (all of these are to be uploaded online – maximum of three). Please indicate whether your sample has been published or broadcast and include details of the airdate where appropriate. If you are uploading essays from your undergraduate degree, select those that, in your view, represent your best work. |

Transcript:
Copies of transcripts of your post-secondary studies.
Personal Statement:
A 1-2 page Statement of Intent, in which you explain your research interests, academic background and training, and your interest in the MA program at Carleton University.
Recommendation Letter:
Letters of reference from two referees. Normally the referees are people who can attest to your academic skills and potential. It is best to ask people who can speak to your writing and research skills and performance in academic courses, as those people are likely best positioned to speak to your promise as a graduate student in a research-intensive program.
Writing Sample:
A sample of your academic writing; applicants can upload a recent term paper that demonstrates your critical thinking, research and writing skills. |
