Personal Statement:
A statement of academic/research interests and ambitions (1-2 pages in length). Applicants’ statements of interest should provide a clear and focused description of their research interests including why they wish to enroll in the program. (A strong research statement elaborates, as clearly as possible, a particular thesis research project the student wishes to carry out, ideally by proposing particular research questions and citing relevant academic literature. Greater elaboration is expected for PhD applicants than for MA applicants).
Recommendation Letter:
Two referee appraisal forms and letters of reference (to be uploaded by referees). All applications must be supported by letters of recommendation from at least two faculty members with whom you have studied, who are in a position to assess your potential for graduate studies and research. References from non-academic supervisors may be acceptable.
Writing Sample:
The sample of written work should have been completed in the most recent degree program and can include a term paper, thesis proposal, or published work.

Personal Statement:
One uploaded statement of intent outlining your interests and objectives in the MA program; usually a 2-5 page, double-spaced document stating your likely area of research, its relevance to communication studies, and any additional information which will allow the admissions committee to understand your research intentions and goals.
Recommendation Letter:
Two electronic confidential referee appraisal forms. Ensure that the referee information provided on your OUAC application form is correct and that referees have been informed of their role. Once your online application is completed, indicated referees will be emailed automatically with the required forms for their completion. Referees should be able to comment on your academic background and aptitude for graduate school.
Writing Sample:

Personal Statement:
A Statement of Intent is generally focused on the research project you intend to pursue, either as a thesis, a dissertation, or as a research essay. As far as possible at this stage, explain your research interests; what questions are you asking, what is your geographical region, what is the time period you are studying? What sources (or types of sources) do you intend to use, and how are you planning to approach the topic? Although not required, applicants are also encouraged to comment on why Carleton would be a good place to pursue your research.
Your Statement of Intent should be between 1 to 2 single-spaced pages in length, although we expect that doctoral applicants should use the full two pages to outline their research projects.
Recommendation Letter:
Letters of Reference (2 required; up to 3 may be uploaded)
Writing Sample:
Ideally, the writing sample should be a recent piece of writing that demonstrates your ability to work with both primary and secondary sources, showcases your ability to analyse and interpret texts, and offers a sense of your writing style. It can be a paper from a course, a publication, or a chapter from a thesis or longer research essay. The writing sample does not need to necessarily match your intended project, although in some cases you may want to emphasize your background and abilities in a particular research area.
The writing sample should be 20-40 pages for Ph.D. applicants, 10-20 pages for M.A., applicants. Please provide a short introduction explaining the context of the writing sample, and whether it is an extract or a full text.

Curriculum Vitae:
One (1) is required. It should include all previous work experience including non-Social Work experience. Feel free to attach a brief letter to the Admissions Committee identifying anything you feel is important to bring to their attention that is not addressed in the rest of the application (e.g. reason for low or failed grade/year, absence of academic or work reference etc.).
Personal Statement:
One (1) is required. It should be no longer than 1,500 words and answer specific questions.1) How have your life, work and educational experiences contributed to your understanding of yourself and others in relation to the society in which we live? (You may wish to reflect on various aspects of your identity such as gender and sexual orientation, economic/class status, life as an Aboriginal person, racial or cultural background, or abilities or disabilities.)2) Identify a social problem that you might want to address as a social worker. Discuss the factors that contribute to or cause this problem. What role would you like to play in resolving this problem?3) What interests you about applying to a structural school of social work? How does studying social work at Carleton fit with your career goals?
Recommendation Letter:
Three (3) are required. One must be an academic reference and one must be a professional reference. Give your referees plenty of time to complete and upload the form by the December 1st deadline.
